im debating which university i should transfer to, UTD is affordable, and baylor is not. but baylor is more prestigious, and also has a dental school that i can go to for graduate school. so is being an undergraduate for a university gives you a better chance of being accepted as a graduate?

I can't speak for dental school, which could be a very different thing, but in some fields it is actually a disadvantage to apply to graduate school at the same place you attended as an undergraduate. My inclination would be to go to the cheaper school, do a stellar job, get great references, and then apply to a different graduate school. I'd definitely poll more people in your immediate field, though, as it can vary. You could also consider directly asking Baylor's dental school admissions people that question (in abbreviated form; I'd leave off the part about what other schools you're considering, just ask about their views towards Baylor undergrads applying to school there).

I agree with uptown; while it may or may not hold true with dental school, attending grad school at the same institution where you received your undergrad is often times looked down upon. There are exceptions, of course.

ditto the above. I don't know about dental school but when I started applying for grad school, I was assured from the schools and different books I read, that it made no difference. So I say, save money and go to the cheaper school - just be sure to get great grades and get to know your professors, so they can write terrific recommendations.
Best of luck!

I agree that Dental School is probably a different kettle of fish. Some of the schools that my son is looking at offer a Masters program with just one more year of schooling. That's pretty appealing to me.

Yes and no. In your case, yes.

I'm not even sure Baylor is more prestigious than UT-Dallas anymore. UTD has really upped its game in the last 10 years, with a lot of very high-profile hires and new programs. Meanwhile, Baylor is still a Baptist school in Waco.

I'm curious about how people view transferring. Is that looked down upon?

UT-Dallas is prestigious these days. The chess team is #1 in the nation (from what I remember) and several of the programs are top quality.
