So, over the course of the winter I've been brushing up on various aspects of local history. Now I'm stumped. I have read that the old depot in Manitou Springs for the Colorado Midland RR still stands, although it has been converted into a house. And, that's it's located somewhere "behind the school property". Apparently it's behind the elementary school (definitely not the middle or high school). I chatted with a Manitou Springs policeman, and he was stumped. Any rail buffs know the exact location?

Thanks

I don't know the address of it, but there is a picture of it in this online blog/forum post: http://www.silverrails.net/Railblogs...orado+Midland/

Do you have the Railroads of the Pikes Peak Region books?

I don't know that it is true, but I remember being taught as a kid that the Short Line to Cripple Creek was the one on the Monopoly board - in its heyday it hauled LOTS of gold down to the Springs for processing, and of course you can still see the tailings all over the side of 24/Cimarron between downtown and Manitou.

More little spots on the map > Colorado Community Newspapers Online - News Aro

Mel McFarland is the train history buff of the Pikes Peak Region. He writes for the Ute Pass Courier (I may be dating myself--that's what it was when I wrote for it) but I think it's now the Courier View or something, out of Woodland Park. This man is a genius, the be all and know all of the railroads here in the Ute Pass Area. His article above, starts with Divide, but he's a specialist on the Midland Railroad. You might want to contact the Courier at 687-3006 and ask them how to get in touch with him.

Train buffs refer to Mel as Mel McMidland.....he also narrates the journeys up and down Pikes Peak on the cog railway.

Found it. It is, indeed, behind the elementary school, but on Prospect Street, not as you might expect on Midland Street. Unfortunately, the owners have modified it (which is okay), but also whitewashed the beautiful red sandstone. Ah well.

Your wish is my command...although you'll hardly recognize the building now...unfortunately whitewashed and clearly modified to make it a home.

Interestingly, the old Denver & Rio Grande RR station in Manitou is not "gone" as most people think. It was torn down, the stone and trimmings saved, and later reassembled somewhat close to the original plan in downtown Colorado Springs as a small office building.
