I don't understand the hype around these moths. I have neighbors who are terrified of them. Really? They don't bite or sting I had one in my house, but refrained from running around screaming.

They're annoying more than anything. In years when we've had them really thick it would get a bit more extreme - like you open your mail box and twenty of them come flying out into your face, accidents at intersections because birds are all over the road diving to get them and cars are trying to avoid hitting the birds, etc.

I have not seen that many this year. One or two usually don't bother people. The problem comes when you do something like leave your porch light on and there is a swarm of hundreds of them out there - don't dare open your front door or they will end up inside.

Or when they've gotten in your house and hide in the folds of your shower curtain liner.....they don't like water and I don't like them flying in my face when I'm a captive audience in the shower!! In Divide, they'd get so thick, we'd leave an undercabinet light on in the kitchen over a bowl of soapy water, and in the morning the bowl would be full of dead moths.

I have also seen people who acted scared of them, and I also find that absurd. Fear of one moth is ridiculous. But some folks are that way. *shrug* Of course there's a huge difference between that and being startled by the unexpected emergence of a large number of them all at once. Like lowering the sun visor in your car and having 20 of them explode out into your face.

In 2012 they WERE intense! It was my first year here, and I wondered if it was always like that. It was a pretty impressive phenomenon.

I'm hoping that like 2013 the freeze we had in may May (April last year) have helped this year too. Not too bad in Briargate so far, keep our fingers crossed!

I'm one of the absurd ones. I've held a dislike and freak-out of moths my whole life.

I haven't noticed them a ton outside, but we probably have at least 40 around the house. This started when my wife decided the screens were counterproductive when trying to nap (noise from insects trying to escape), so she just opened the screens on all the windows. Sure is working out great...

For anyone here that has a dog, the moths are not toxic to dogs. I taught my dog to hunt them. Now when they show up in the house, we have a game of try to smack the moth down to the dog's level, and the dog bites them out of the air.

Moths became fun, and it is one of her favorite games.
