yes, you have the option to get on a wait list but you will then, well...wait. LOL! If you want to arrive and move into base housing, you will be where they need occupancy (at this point in time, anyway) - when we arrived at our last base, occupancy was at 65%. It then became mandatory to live on base until at least 90% was reached - you were offered two houses in any of 10 areas...only requirement was "within 60min commute" -- there were lots of unhappy residents, but "it is what it is" I felt bad for the dual military who were basically giving up GOOD money to live in crappy base housing when they could have afforded a really nice place off base. There are schools to consider too - if you are happy with the schools or driving your kid to the district you want, so be it. None of this is really all that applicable to civilians tho, which is what the OP is....
