We have looked at dozens of homes this past week and are depressed at the selection of decent existing homes available. Now I will admit we are being picky because this is hopefully going to be the last home we buy and will be living in it for 60 years. We were looking for a moderately large home (3500 sq ft or larger) but wanted some acreage. Our price point was the VA max of $417k. Just like one previous poster mentioned, all the homes we looked at had something wrong that needed to be changed or fixed. We looked at one house that was 5k sq ft and they were asking $500k for it. The smell of air fresher was so strong we knew something was wrong. Then we found at least five cats, a bird, and possibly a dog or two living there. The combination left us concerned. Long story short, we found a new construction spec home for about $92 sq ft on 2.5 acres for $80k less. It has everything we were looking for and we don't have to worry about unseen problems. Maybe this was a lucky, perfect fit for us but the key thing here is to keep looking and be patient.
