When we move to COS this summer, my two small children and I will fly out and stay in a hotel for a few days while my husband and the movers drive out. If I'm going to be at a hotel with no car and a toddler for a few days, what area should I stay in? I'm looking for good casual restaurants and fun things to see within walking distance. Bonus points for a playground and chefs who can deal with allergies!

I'd appreciate any thoughts!

I'd recommend Manitou Springs.

Lots of walking and hiking, a park, a penny arcade, the cog train up pikes peak, it's compact and walkable.

Seconded; when looking at lists for veggie/gluten free places, Manitou also goes to the top of that list as well. You'd want to find a place fairly *within* Manitou as well for walking.

Manitou recently redid their children's parks- they have two awesome ones. My kids love them.

I think you'd be okay in Manitou, and also possibly in downtown Colorado Springs - maybe the Wilbur Fountain will be going then....

Old Colorado City is near Manitou Springs, with lots of great eats and shops. Garden of the Gods is right around the corner! Great, beautiful area; rented a cabin for a month in Manitou Springs one spring; wonderful!

I see that you decided on Manitou. I think that's a fabulous choice. My wife and I just returned from three nights there. We stayed at the Villa Motel/America's Best Value Inn. It was nothing fancy, but it was clean as a whistle, large room, refrigerator, microwave, we felt very safe there and it's across the street from a park and within easy walking distance of town. (We are hotel snobs, so this is high praise from us!) I would strongly suggest that you look in to it! I don't know when you're planning to visit, but I saw that they're going to be running a free shuttle through town starting on May 19th. That will be a tremendous asset. Good luck on your visit and move!
