I will say something that struck at the DMV: that moment when a staff member recognized me as her 8th grade teacher from ten years ago.

I barely recognized her! Remembered her name, though.

I too came here a couple years ago and found that if you go on line do exactly what they say, it is not too bad and you can even check what days are best and least crowded. In Washington state, they will give anyone an ID or license. Here no and I have never been to one with armed security. I also went to the one on Union. Now, to register a car that I bought a few months ago, it took me 10 and I mean 10 minutes there. Now if you want a real thrill try the Social Security office and their is only one. Make sure you have the right address as they moved not long ago. The security is just like if you were at an airport. Don't forget these people are understaffed and their hours they are open have been cut. It is only going to get worse. It is not the same in every state. My advice is to get a passport and keep it current--that is your best ID.

(returning native) I went back again today with every possible document they could ask for and was told the system was down. Well, any idea how long it will be and I get a smart aleck answer "if I knew that, I would tell you. It happens all the time." How hard is it, Coloradans, to run an efficient system and not like something operating in a third world country??
I keeping my residency in another state that doesn't have income taxes. This makes me feel ever better about it.

If you have a valid, legal reason for keeping your residency in another state (ie military) that's fine, but if you're simply a tax-evading scofflaw who's leeching off the system that's a problem. There are far too many entitled jackwagons who wanna live here but don't wanna pay the state income tax or register their cars here because "it's too expensive."

I sure hope they are back up on Wed as I made another appt. If I get the run around again, I'm just gonna have to stay illegal a while longer as my tolerance level is shot.

They are back up. I was in there today for car registration. The wait was terrible because of everybody that came back today due to the previous outtage. I was there 2 hours.

FWIW, this has been a statewide issue and is not isolated to Colorado Springs. Although the sheer volume of traffic the Cos offices get and how far out any appointments they make tend to be, has prompted me to go to Pueblo on an occasion or two.

I spent about 45 minutes on my appointed day and got through the system - not bad! Amazingly, I received my driver's license less than a week later so for that I am grateful.

Here is my DMV story. You see the DMV wants IDs with your full legal name, first-middle-last. Here is what I had with me when I went to get make my Virginia license into Colorado license:
valid military ID
valid Virginia licence
valid passport

My military ID doesn't have my middle name, nor did the Virginia license. My valid passport had my middle name, BUT it was prior to the requirement of getting a brand new passport after you get married. Instead, the passport agency would type in the back of the passport that the name was legally changed, however, when they do that, they don't have the middle name in it.

So, with all three valid documents to prove who I was, I was very close to being required to go back home to get my birth certificate and my marriage certificate because both have my first-middle-last AND proof of my name change, as if the other valid three documents I brought couldn't do that.

It wasn't until a supervisor came and said to the clerk I was with that I had enough documents to prove who I was. ;-(
