I am a 60 year old single Black female with no kids and very little funds. I was born and raised on the East Coast . I worked in D.C and lived in Owings Mills MD. My background is Accounts Receivable and still have to work. I am very fit and active, I just need a change of scenery, I still have to work.I would like to move to Colorado. I understand there are very few blacks I have an open mind. I am more concerned with employment and companies that are hiring someone my age. I have B.A degree in Psychology that I never used. Does anyone know what my chances are in obtaining employment?
I plan on visiting, I need employment. I moved across country to Texas and stay with family however the salary for non techies is low. Any help is appreciated.

Check Craigslist for jobs in the local area, may not be all that much here for A/R work. The south part of COLO SPGS has some diversity due to all the military personnel at Fort Carson. Check Zillow for home prices, plan on at least $250-300k to buy, or $1000 to rent an apartment.

If you can find work, come live in Widefield/Security if you're not too picky you can get a decent home for a single person for under 200,000 if you move fast. I don't know what to tell you about jobs - you might check with the local school districts and see if there are any comparable positions there.

Thanks to both of you. I will try Craigslist . I am not sure about the school district. Well I will be driving to Colorado next week just to look around.
I will stay positive.

Hi Javon! First, let me applaud you for having the courage to jump! I grew up in the Northeast, but have lived in the southwest for nearly 20 years. I think Colorado could be the change you are seeking. It is a beautiful state and vastly different from east coast living. If you're able to secure work I say go for it!

I'd also recommend checking here jobs with smaller local employers: https://www.connectingcolorado.com/
We have any number of large corporate organizations here as well. If you want to check their individual job boards, here is the list of the largest employers in the area: https://coloradospringschamberedc.co...20_Private.pdf

If you are fit and active, this may be a good place for you to be. Colo Spgs and CO in general tend to rank very high in ratings for active populations. The AA population in Colo Spgs tends to be between 6-8% depending on your source. So it will not be too difficult to find services such as hair care that would specialize in AA needs, but you may not find a large selection of wide number of options. Also, because of the percentage of military that we have in town, we tend to be a very live and let live place. We also have a high percentage of transplanted residents here, so it is not difficult at all to meet many others who have moved here for a change.

Good luck with you upcoming trip!

Thanks for all the advice. My top concern is ageism. I just hit the big 60, when employers figure out my age the door seems to close.I hope Colorado is Senior friendly.

Unfortunately, I believe ageism is everywhere - it may not be overt, but people don't have to tell you why you're not being hired.

As well as the other suggestions, I would look into a few temp agencies as well. Sometimes those jobs lead to full-time positions ... you never know.

For instance, this locally-owned agency has been around for a long time: https://addstaffinc.com/

They typically have a few accounting positions.
