Well, up in the mountains, you could always use skunk cabbage (actually false hellebore) in a pinch--gotta shake them ants out first.

Came late to this one and don't have the time to read all the posts, but at least for the original poster, 2W, FWD, AWD, 4x4... Often really doesn't matter what you have going on there, for the most part, the streets are kept pretty well plowed or the snow just isn't deep enough to worry about.

Next, Experience. Learn to drive it and slow down.

Next, Tires, tires, tires. Tires make all the difference. I watch my neighbor get around just fine in a rear wheel drive only pickup truck with studded tires. Not saying that studded tires are all that in a nutshell though. I don't have studded tires myself.

Jeep or Subaru. What can you say?

I like my Jeep, but we got stuck in drifts twice 2 years ago, but 2 years ago was "Denver's 5th worst winter in history" supposedly. It was bad. Besides that, I had just regular BFG All Terrains for that and those aren't exactly the best tires for snow and ice. Like someone else said, 1, 2,3 4wd, just dictates how many tires will spin on ice.

Here's my Jeep in the configuration that I got stuck in even.

YEah I haven't had good experiences with BFG all terrains either. They look nice, but really suck in mud and snow. Now the Rock Krawlers on the other hand....

I helped a lot of stuck vehicles, mostly 4x4's, that year. We have a serious drift that forms in front of our home. The best technique I've seen so far was a lifted Tahoe with giant tires that blasted through where no else had made it, not even the huge plows. He made it to our driveway, dropped off our neighbor, and blasted back. He either was going to make it through or crash trying. Never saw anyone do that since.
btw- Good to see you posting again Swampy
