I'll agree that one bark a week is plenty~ and although you say it is an exageration if you left your dog and weren't there you may not realise it was your dog barking. My thought is the nieghbor probably did not exagerate~ you were just too far from your dog to hear it!

Two things that drive me nuts at night, barking dogs, and train horns....

there's just something about that 'bark' that will snap you right out of a good sleep...
I like and enjoy dogs also...but the nature of my relationship has changed with them...

As a youth, I would let a dog under the sheets...now I'm like...'wipe your feet or paws, and sleep on the floor'...

As I stated in my original post, we never leave our dog outside when we are not home - for exactly this reason. It's mostly irrelevant now, as the situation has been handled.

My wife and I have three labs. They love being outside but if they bark more than once while they are out, we go out and give them a little talking to - actually, it's usually enough just to poke our head out the back door! If they continue, they come inside. They've learned to sit outside peacefully.

Now, we have a neighbor behind us that has a small dog - believe it is a daschund - that barks all day long. 5 minutes here and there but after several hours, it is annoying. My wife works from home 3 days a week; I work from home 1-2 days when not traveling. When the weather is nice and our neighbors have their backdoor opened, we've witnessed them come to the door to shut it because the barking is obviously bothering them.

We aren't ones to complain although we should probably say something to them.

As for the the barking birdhouse, we saw that in the Orvis catalog and thought long and hard about getting it!!

If you feel that dogs do not bark while they are inside you never met my nieghbors dog~ and I will repeat~ if you were not there and your dog was its just that you couldn't hear it where you were~ not that the dog did not bark!!!!

Haha! Without trying to turn this into too much of an internet argument, I will say that you can't make the logical conclusion that just because your neighbors dog barks while inside, ALL dogs bark while inside. I have never heard my dog bark inside my house, ever. Obviously, this does not mean she doesn't ever bark in the house when nobody is around to hear it, nor have I made such a claim.

Furthermore, you don't have enough details to jump to the conclusion that my dog must be barking and my neighbor probably isn't exaggerating. For instance - my wife doesn't work - we don't just leave our dog inside all day by herself. There is almost always a person at home with the dog.

I'm not one to make "accusations" lightly. My neighbor was exaggerating - if I thought there was a remote chance that they weren't, it wouldn't have bothered me half so much.

I think this is about all I'll say on the matter. Thank you to everyone for your helpful responses. The situation is resolved, although I do think I will talk to my neighbor as someone suggested.

Ahhh, but the real question is...

IF a dog barks inside the house and nobody is around to hear it, THEN does it make a noise?

Yes, cause the canary bird hears it...

Oh? Handled how? Were you able to resolve this amicably after all?

I have a question concerning neighbor dogs.

My neighbors have two pits they keep outside all the time. They are constanting barking etc. They head but the wood fence and actually broke a couple bottom pieces and could fit their head in. Monday night one of them moved the big rock I had blocking it, and got a hold of my dog, cutting her really bad. I just dropped her off at the vet because she has to have surgery and stiches. The estimated cost is $300. My neighbor isn't home to discuss it right now but I have a feeling they won't pay. What options do I have to get it resolved? Where would I file a complaint?

I'm from the country so I don't know many of the city rules concerning pets.

Any input is appreciated.
