Yes, and apathy along with a belief that big money will buy off whichever politicians they need to in order to get their way, i.e., no sense fighting if you're going to lose anyway. Fighting something like this takes big-time "professional" enviro types from out of town whose pockets are deep enough to wage the legal and technical battles.

Wink Principle of determination

If everyone in Cañon City with a concern for their environment, meaning all those who breath and exist in it, took an interest in their health, and decided to do something about it -- the story might be much different.

An activists group can be effective for the same reason corporations are, because they are focused. Whereas the general population is usually fragmented, and often by design kept that way by the powers that be.

But it shouldn't escape the citizens of Cañon City that such things are first and foremost a question of their personal life and health. Everyone theoretically has a keen vested interest in that. And if all feeling as much, or even a good proportion of them, made a point of telling the mayor and other authorities that business-as-usual in Cañon City was coming to an abrupt halt until this resolved to their satisfaction -- it would be.

It is only because they believe they are hopeless that they are.

A big part of the problem of apathy in Canon City has to do with the community being fed misinformational crap from Cotter and the Chamber of Commerce for so many years.

Cotter & the Chamber have had this PR campaign about how Cotter is actually GOOD for the community. They have been very persuasive over the years as a local "job creator".

Health and environment be damned - Cotter Corp will most likely have their way and the government will be complicit. People keep to themselves around here and don't seem to want to stick their necks out for anything.

It's really infuriating how Cotter takes advantage of Canon City.

Then again, 100 people is a good turnout for Canon City - especially on a snow day.

I don't know for sure anymore. It used to be around 40 a few years ago, but then they laid a whole bunch off. They are at minimal capacity now so I don't imagine it's more than 10 - but don't quote me on that.

Cotter Corp is not a major employer in Fremont County (not like the prisons!) so the jobs argument doesn't resonate with me.

update: and it's actually good news!

Cotter seeking to terminate license - Canon City Daily Record

The part that I find irritating is the line where Cotter states their reason for withdrawing is because it is no longer "economic" to proceed.
Never mind the massive health & environmental concerns.

Yes, just saw the article in the Denver Post....they say they ARE going to go ahead and clean up the site, which will be excellent if they really do that.

Historically, hasn't Canon City usually taken that same kind of attitude? After all, years ago they were given a choice of a college or a prison. They chose the prison.

"years ago" - you're talking the 1860's when that decision was made! (between a university or a prison) before Colorado was even a state.

I'm pretty sure there's no one alive today who was even remotely involved in that decision.
