My Fiance and I are moving to Grand Junction next august. Right now we are both in school in Washington and I am from Seattle.
He is originally from Boulder and cannot afford to finish his last two years of school up here so we are moving to Grand Junction. I will be the one who has to find a job (teaching) and supporting us while he finishes up.
My questions are, can anyone tell me my chances of getting a job in or near Grand Junction, how is the area as in, crime, living conditions (especially for us poor just out of college kids!!)
I am so nervous about this huge move and I really have not heard anything great about Grand Junction!

Default It can be done!

It can be done. My wife got a teaching job in Grand Junction even though she initially applied from out of state. She is an exceptional teacher though. She could probably get a teaching job anywhere!

Here is a link to the Mesa County School District (http://www.mesa.k12.co.us/2003/Human_Resources/index.cfm - broken link) to get you started.

There are many existing threads providing further information about Grand Junction which you can find by doing a search.

Here are links to a few of them.

Teaching jobs in Grand Junction are fairly competitive. I just finished an alternative teaching program last May and I was fortunate to be hired on by the school where I did my student teaching. However, I have many friends who did not get a job right out of school. The good news is, that subs are in high demand as we are a very large district. If you don't get a teaching job then you can sub and make a decent living at it (from what I have seen). I would also suggest that you write cover letters to principals letting them know you are interested in a job. Don't just send your resume to the school district and expect to get a phone call. Even though Grand Junction is growing, it still works like a small town. At least getting your name around with help with a job prospect. Good luck on your move and make sure you work on getting your CO teaching license.

Hey

Just wanted to agree with what delta07 said ~ it might be best to get started on your licensure as soon as you can ~ Educator Licensing and Professional Services Index Page (I think that's the right site).

Colorado's licensure process can be long, time consuming and money consuming, so just wanted to give you an extra "heads up". I cant speak for the GJ job market directly, but, like delta07 said, subbing may be a pretty good gig for a year while you get yourself established. GJ seems like a pretty good place to live, so have faith that you'll get a great job ~ best wishes

A great website to check out any school in the US is: GreatSchools.net . We've moved over 18 times in 25 years with kids the last 17 and ALWAYS look at this website to determine what area we want to be in etc., based on what the schools are like.
