Many of these ^ claims are located above 12,000 feet so be prepared.

Also consider Ruby Mountain outside of Buena Vista. It's named for the misidentified garnets and rose/smokey quartz that occurs locally. Nice campsite along the Arkansas.

There is also a local honey hole across 285 from Chubb Park. It is east/south east from the intersection of 285 and CR 307. Mostly quartz crystals from what I've been told. Happy hunting.

Newbie to rockhounding here with a scouting question

We went up around Lake George looking for crystals, but had no luck. This is because we had no clue where to dig.
Can someone please describe to me what we should look for on the ground when trying to find a place to dig?
ie: certain color of soil? Quartz laying around on surface?
Like I said, we have untrained eyes and don't wan't to be digging a million holes for nothing.
Thanks for your help!

Default stevetheshlepper

My wife and I are taking a road trip to Colorado this August and can I get to some mineral digging sites with a 2 wheel drive crossover suv.
We will be in Durango through Salida to Colorado Springs.
Any suggestions for an untrained eye (completely inexperienced) looking for minerals and whatever else is beneath my feet.

My wife is not thrilled with this part of the trip so if it could be interesting for her that would be greatly appreciated.
I would prefer going with a group if possible that has at least someone that is experienced.

Thank you,

Steve

Stevetheshlepper, are you going through Buena Vista? We've been on vacations there many times over the years and have done a bit of rock hounding in the area. We haven't been there for several years and I don't have any good current spots. I would suggest stopping in or calling a local rock shop there. We used to get some good suggestions at a little rock shop called the Rock Doc. (I'm not affiliated with them, but I've bought things there.) They've given us some good information for gold panning and other rock hunting locations over the years. You could probably stop in and they'd have suggestions. You can get rock hammers or basic gold panning equipment there.

We used to love Mt Antero to look for aquamarines, but I don't believe the road has been graded in years and it was extremely rugged when we drove it with four wheel drive. The Prospecting show appears to have brought out some rougher characters. Some other favorite places like Ruby Mountain to hunt for garnets have also become less accessible.

Crystals of what? Did you read through this thread? There are lots of suggestions already there. Or just watch a few episodes of Prospectors on the Weather Channel. Or read this for some more ideas - Crystal Hunting in Colorado | Blog for Rock Shop Retail Stores and Wholesale Fossil Buyers

How do I DM you? My father and brother are visiting me in Denver. They live near Missoula, Mt. They desperately want to do some rock hounding while there are here. They are willing to drive 2 hours in each direction. They are interested in a fee dig or they can also do their own if they knew where to go. They do have their own tools. Not sure what kinds of rocks they are interested in. Probably anything. Please call me if you can help. My phone number is 816-341-2302. They leave in a few days so if you can call tonight that would be great. Thanks so much!
