I have a situation I've been pondering and I'd love some ideas.

My husband and I currently live just outside Manhattan, Kansas which is a small university city. My recently widowed mother-in-law lives in Boone, Colorado Her father and one of her sisters live in Pueblo and I believe a brother and another sister live in the Colorado Springs area. My mother-in-law is a sweet lady who has had ongoing medical issues for a couple of decades now. When it became clear that my father-in-law's time was near we gently encouraged her to consider moving nearer to us. But I don't think we're going to get her away from her father and sister willingly, which I completely understand and respect. On the other hand, her driving is not the best and she not only drives into Pueblo regularly but to Ft Carson for medicine as well.

So, in the next 2-5 years I hope to transition to career that I can do online from anywhere. There are other reasons besides wanting to be close to my mother-in-law, but not having to worry about finding a job in the Pueblo area if we decide to move there does play into it. If I get the career I'm aiming for, my husband won't have to work if he can't find a job. Not that I'd be making a ton of money, it's just that put together our current wages don't add up to much. We make do.

If keeping my mother-in-law in her house (which is incidentally the home she grew up in) is the goal, we should consider moving to Boone. I see two problems with this. One, if I'm going to work online the internet needs to be fast and reliable. From what I've seen at her house this isn't the case though I suppose that could be at least partially due to her lack of tech savvy. The second problem is that I haaaate Boone. I'm one who doesn't need bright city lights to keep entertained but I just can't find any charm in the place.

Now Avondale seems more attractive to me when we've driven through it, but I'm guessing the internet issue will be the same. That's something I need to look into.

I'm also considering Pueblo itself as well as Pueblo West. Though they might be a little too far away if my mother-in-law gets to the point where she needs daily help. However, if it's the nearest place we could get reliable internet then we'll figure it out.

We drive back and forth a lot, but I'd love some insight from people who actually live there.

TLDR version:

I'm possibly looking to relocate in a couple of years to someplace near, but not in Boone, Colorado. It would need to have fast, reliable internet for my job. I'm not sure about living in Pueblo itself, would consider it but would prefer to be closer to mom-in-law. Any ideas?

I would suggest Avondale. Its not far from Pueblo yet not far from Boone and a nice suburb.

Thanks Josseppie! I'll have to look into internet access. If that's good than Avondale may be just what we need.

I lived for several years in the Avondale area. The issue with internet there is that HughsNet is the best of several poor options. My wife worked remotely and having enough bandwidth available was the issue. Hughs will "throttle" you if you go over a certain amount. You have to pay what amounts to a ransom in the form of $10 dollar "restore tokens" to get your speed back. It was not unusual for us to pay $300+ per month for internet.

Of course, to be fair, my wife was uploading and downloading fairly massive amounts of data. Your results may be different.
