You really need to be able to scout the area a bit in advance. So much depends on the amount of rain the area receives year to year. Sometimes they will be in the quakies and sometimes in the canyon bottoms. The only way to know where they will be will be scout in advance. Actually the closer the better to the opener if that's all the time you have.

Agreed, we are in Monument, CO so not far away. Will have to camp a few times over there and do some scouting. What is a quakie?

Yep, Aspens. Usually start at higher altitudes but can live lower. My Uncle used to live in Monument but they moved to Canon City.

We love Monument, but the only thing is, I’m too far from hunting and don’t get a chance to meet landowners in places I want hunt. Usually the wildlife is hiding, from all the nincompoops that herd in from out of state, on their private lands... hard to find a spot anymore even if you walk in 4-5 miles. Hoping I can find an elusive one in Unit 50, but from what I have read they are few and far between....

Here's
a map of Unit 50. Data indicate a 14.8% chance of success, with 502 sq miles and 843 authorized hunters, or 1.7 hunters per sq mile.
As best I can make out from the map, Unit 50 is far enough west of Florissant that it seems to be in the Hartsel, Antero Junction, Fairplay areas so I'm going to move this to the main COLO forum where it may get some more input from folks who don't frequent the COLO SPGS forum.
