My husband is thinking about taking a position in Anderson, it seems like a nice area but very small. What is a larger community close that is safe and has shopping, dining, etc.?

Anderson isn't in the Columbia area.

Hi Patty,
Anderson is in the Upstate, just off I-85 about 25 minutes south of Greenville. A large portion of Greenville suburbs spill into Northeastern Anderson County.

Anderson itself is a decent place, close to Lake Hartwell and has average shopping, restaurants, etc. For bigger city amenities, Greenville is just a short drive up 85 where you'll find excellent local restaurants downtown, all the major chain restaurants, Whole Foods, Trader Joes, the largest mall in the state, Apple, Pottery Barn, etc, etc.

Anderson is not as small as a lot of people usually think. I remember the first time I was in Anderson maybe ten or so years ago--I was impressed with how much it had shopping and dining wise for a city that seems to be less "on the radar" than Greenville and Spartanburg. Since then it has only gotten more developed. Anderson's downtown has some nice areas to walk around with some great restaurants and eateries. You've got a lot of shopping and dining options mainly along Clemson Blvd. with a lot of the standards (Best Buy, Dicks, Books-a-Million, etc.)

With that said, the obvious choice for a larger community nearby would be Greenville. Like what's been said, some of the Greenville suburbs are in Anderson County like Powdersville.
