It appears to me he was anti-rich person and anti-corporation. Positioned himself as champion of the poor man. Sounds like a modern Democrat to me. The other irony is that it was Ernest Hollings who put the Confederate flag up on the State House, and he was a Democrat.

Not in this case, he would be a Democrat today if he stayed true to his principles.
I don't think the same voters are going to support a party that reverses their positions on numerous issues.
And there certainly are lots of voters who vote for a party because their parents do or did. And their parents did because their parents did, etc, etc.
You know the multi-story (four floors?) building on Devine Street just up from Five Points that has needed pressure-washing and painting for about a dozen years or more? It just got pressure-washed and is getting a fresh coat of paint now.
I've always thougth Devine Street seems more like the real Main Street, it looks like what you would think a traditional Main Street would look like.
Gervais Street looks more like a "Main Street" than Devine Street does. And it's location is more appropriate for a "Main Street" than Devine Street's is. As far as the name "Main Street" is concerned, I'd have no problem if they returned Main Street's name to Richardson Street.
