Looking to possibly move to Columbia from the Northwest Indiana area. We know nothing about Columbia. Not much experience with the south. Need to know what area is best & affordable for families with small children, good schools and activities for children. Would like to rent to own. Having 3 small boys, I can't see us in an apartment. Much to small for them to be rambuctious.
I have a cousin who moved from Indiana to Arizona because of asthma. It worked. The southeast is too humid in the summer to recommend for an asthmatic.

Health issues aside, unless you have a reason to move to Columbia, the Charleston area is far superior in many, many ways.
Main reasons to move to Columbia are that housing prices are cheap and to get away from winter weather. You should be able to find rent to own houses. Salaries would be less than you're used to, probably.
OP: Have you ever been to Columbia? or even SC? There are flowing trees, shrubs, pines and flowers everywhere. Your car, regardless of regular color, will be an interesting shade of yellow/green from pollen in the Spring. If you leave it outside all day, you can write your name in it by evening. My family doesn't suffer from asthma but there's plenty of allergy issues.
I'd also strongly suggest having a secure job before moving.

Solid advice. Come down and rent a cabin on Lake Murray for a week and visit then see what you think.
One more hint for the OP. If you are also considering North Carolina, remember they're the Tarheels because of the pine tar -- I'm sure you've seen their logo with the foot and a spot of tar. There are pine trees all over the Carolinas and that can also be really rough for pollen and, thus, breathing problems.

Yes Boston is where we lived (and I am originally from) prior to moving to SC.
My wife is an SC Native (USC Alumna) and we have spent vacations and holidays here (primarily Columbia, West Columbia, Cayce area) for the last 30 years. We have vacationed/visited/have family (hers) up and down the SC coast (Low Country from Hilton Head to Myrtle Beach) and Upstate (Greenville, Clemson, etc.) and many places in between.
I have also lived in NYC, Chicago, LA, San Francisco, Ohio, and Ireland.
We own homes in Columbia (Lexington) and Charleston (Mount Pleasant) thus I have.....as some might say...been around the block a few times.
It is hard to keep them down on the farm once they have seen Broadway......LOL
