So USC's undergraduate population of around 23,000 is 54% female, while the 2010 Census says the city as a whole is 48.5% female. Does this feel right to you?
This means the non-USC portion of the city skews fairly heavily male. If my calculations are correct, this comes out to roughly 6,000 more males than females in the non-usc city population alone.
Most of the times I am around The Vista, I see way more men than women. Just recently on a day off, I went to Ale House down there and no women at all eating at 1 pm on what was a work day for most people.
This doesnt surprise me at all, especially looking at the city proper rather than the metro, but even then I would agree with this. Columbia's economy driven by government, banking, insurance, and sales tends to be more male driven industries, thus meaning that you will naturally have more males than females (of course this is a generalization and in no way sexist). Females being more into the fields of the creative industry traditionally will be much more attracted to a city with a strong creative scene such as a Charleston, where as someone in the male dominated banking industry will be more attracted to Columbia.
Again, not sexist and not a rule, just an observation but overall I am not at all surprised by this statistic. As a 25 year old male living downtown, there really are not very many females my age around.
It's the rise of the gayborhoods. Lesbians are more likely to have children and prefer the suburbs and country.
I was going to say the same thing. A lot of gay men live in Columbia and we prefer to live in the city, while most lesbians I know prefer the suburbs or rural areas.
