My family and I are thinking about moving down to Columbia this time next year. My father-in-law retires and wants to go south. He would like to be just outside of the city in a nice subarb. What areas should we possible look at and what areas NOT to look at? I have 3 children under 3 and schooling is very important. Any advice would be appreciated.

Lake Murray is a fairly popular retirement destination. Based on your description I'd suggest Chapin, SC. It's rural, on the lake, and is in the blue ribbon Lexington/Richland 5 School District.

Lake Carolina is also a possibility, it is closer to activities other than the lake and the schools are also good.

Irmo is in Lexington/ Richland 5: Blue Ribbon schools, arguably the best in the state. Locally the most desired districts are Lex/Richland 5, Richland 2, and Lexington 1.
