At the risk of having to join this mess - I will tell you this. Watch LIVE PD ---- there is no place and I mean NO PLACE in Columbia that on any given day you can't be killed - robbed or worse. Recently a cop was murdered at the local mall at around 9AM. Someone called the cops about a guy who was suspicious or some such. The cop drives up - gets out and BAM shot dead. So how will you possible be more save than a trained - armed and armored police officer or Deputy? Not going to happen. Crime today is crazy and without rhyme or reason. I had to join to post this but I am sure I will leave it asap as they will flood my email -- still it is a crime ridden City with such a low number of police even the criminals are like - crap man we got to go.
Are you talking about the grammar police? And when you say "worse," than being killed - robbed do you mean educated? All that aside, this post really made me laugh!
Hi there, dont really know much about Columbia. Will be new to the area, are there any nice & reasonable apts around the V.A.? If not, any in close proximity with minimum crime rate?

Look at the complexes along Gills Creek Parkway/Pelham Road; behind Target.

5000 Forest and 42 Magnolia on Forest Drive or Otarre Point in Cayce are very nice an about a 10 min drive on the freeway. If you don't need to be in an apartment community, you can find some pretty nice places in Rosewood, Historic Melrose and Shandon (duplex, over garage apartment) for a reasonable rate, and in very nice neighborhoods.
I am yet another considering South Carolina to retire. It is still a couple years away.
I would look for a house with bedroom, room for an office (I am a writer / author), and a larger room for hobbies (I have several). Because it is just me, the dog and cat, I have a lot of flexibility. Kitchen is important also. I need lots of room.
Safe areas are first thought. Enough yard area for a great vegetable garden. And maybe room for fruit trees.
Also not in a HOA area. I use a clothes line not a dryer. I also make soap, learning to do a lot of other things towards self sufficiency - such as cheese, etc.
Pricing housing this far out is probably very difficult, but generally which areas will be most affordable and meet other hopes.
I have mostly been looking around Columbia. But not set on any place yet.

If you can provide more specifics folks may chime in more... Type/style of house...location.. intown, suburb more rural...do you want to be near amenities like shopping, outdoor activities etc. You said you are retired so schools and commuting may not be an issue. As far as things like crime.. I dont know where you are moving from but crime in Columbia in terms "bad areas" are scattered across the metro and are more tied to subdivisions or a few square blocks as opposed to entire sections of the city as in larger places... If you provide more information on the type of home and location (intown, suburban, or rural) it will be easy to suggest areas to move into as the areas to avoid are pretty self apparent.
