I'm moving to Columbia and I was wondering if there are any creatures to look out for. I'll be living in/around the downtown area and have a decent sized yard with a border collie that will be living in it. I want her to be safe and I want to do all that I can to prevent pest problems.
I don't think there are any pests that would bother your dog. If you will be close to a creek or another water source there *could* be snakes, but I have seen very, very few snakes through the years in the city. We do have a red fox that lives in my neighborhood, but they aren't very big and wouldn't bother a dog like that. I know out west those types of pests are more of a problem. When my niece lived in Phoenix, a coyote killed her dachshund.
The biggest threat I know of are other peoples dogs. Look out for Pit Bulls and similar dogs. My cat was recently killed by a neighbors dog who got out of the fence.
Also, it is a good idea to spray your lawn for mosquitos. They can be a real nuisance.

Reason: no advertising

You never miss an opportunity to plug your website, do you? You do know that advertising is forbidden on here; right?
I have been in SC for two years and a couple days ago was the first time I ever saw a palmetto bug....it was so huge....half the size of a diet coke can. I wish I knew how to post a picture on this (because of course I took a picture of it)....that may have been the scariest thing I have seen since I have been in SC.
Thanks, all, for the suggestions! With regard to the commentary on mosquitoes, I did notice an abundance of them in my backyard, i.e. I got bit every time I was out.
How exactly do you spray for mosquitoes (I know the explanation seems implicit within the description) and is this hazardous to animals?
And to the Palmetto bug: Do they live on/near/around the trees or are they a fact of life? I really wanted to plant a Palmetto tree!
Thanks,
GL.
