City officials said they will break ground on the $17.5 million natatorium behind the Muscogee County School District office on Macon Road in August or September as part of a $32.5 million complex that also includes a city services center and parking garage. City officials estimate the project will take approximately 16 months to complete after construction begins.

Proponents of the 50,000-square-foot natatorium and those involved in its design said it will provide new opportunities for competitive and recreational swimming at all levels, from youth lessons to Special Olympics competitions and more involvement at the competitive high school and club levels.

The Natatorium will include a 50-meter, competition-sized pool will have 10 lanes and an adjacent four-lane warm-up and therapeutic pool. The plans also include locker rooms, offices, training rooms, family changing rooms with showers, a pro shop and seating for 900 spectators.

Officials expect the entire facility to be completed in late 2013.

Will this tower the outskirts or is it going to take up a lot of space.

50,000 square feet... in keeping with the style in Columbus, it'll probably sprawl a bit.

But--- there's only so much space available back there now, right?

There is a lot of space back there. It is going to be awesome when it is completed. A hotel is looking at the site as well.
