Inernational prestige- Edge Savannah (by a mile)

Domestic prestige- Edige Savannah (by a mile)

Not knocking Augusta here. I've always liked AUG. But Savannah is the state's "second city" in recognition and prestige.
Actually quit the opposite, I don't play golf at all. I was born and raised in Augusta and I have seen first hand what the city has to offer. I'm military and I have been all over the globe training with other forces. When I tell them i'm from Augusta not even mentioning Georgia, they all ask me am I a good golfer. The point is for what people think about Augusta, the Masters has a deepening impact on the international image far greater than any thing Savannah has trust me, I have been there and I have done my homework. Not to say Savannah is not the second city in the eyes of the public, but internationally Augusta is the second city in Georgia with the Masters alone. Wimbledon is known world wide for tennis and even the Masters outranks it respectfully. Now then, congrats to Columbus for making this list. The city truly is jewel for the state, economically and historically and it's residents should be proud.

dpatt: what planet are you living on? Augustiva?

Maybe your wife works for the Augusta Convention and Visitors Bureau? There's no hope for either of you. You're from Augusta itself (thus, biased) and, what really weakens your argument, you believe that one single international athletics tournament (the golf Master's) gives Augusta the "international edge" over Savannah? That is just preposterous, laughable. Too bad.

masonbauknight, you right. Savannah does have the upper hand on tourism, metro pop and being known international. However,Columbus and Savannah economy is run by the same things.

Savannah Port.
Columbus Port.
Port Columbus
Fort Stewart
Fort Benning.

ColumbusKid: Metro Savannah is slightly more populous than metro Columbus, so their economies are similar in size. Augusta's is larger--it is GA's second city in population and economic might (but not in prestige and recognition).

I wouldn't compare the Port of Savannah (one of the largest seaports on the Atlantic) with the Port of Columbus (a much smaller outfit). Columbus is a military and corporate town, with huge Fort Benning, AFLAC and other stuff in or near town. Ft. Stewart is outside Savannah metro, in the Hinesville-Fort Stewart metro area. Most of the guys and gals at Ft. Stewart don't live in metro Savannah but in/around Hinesville. Ft. Stewart doesn't impact Savannah the way Ft. Benning does Columbus.

The argument is over about which city is better, as for one international sports even, yes it can boost a city over another, look at what the Olympics did for Atlanta, why do you think the city wants to host the Super Bowl so badly. The revenue and media attention sports events give their host city can have a large effect on its world prestige, so yes one sporting event can give Augusta more international prestige over Savannah which is only known for its history and domestically for it's port.

Fort Benning isn't apart of the Columbus metro either. Fort Benning is apart of the CSA.

dpatt: The Master's is a once-a-year golf tournament, the biggest of several. Augusta hosts the Master's for one week. Augustans who think that equals Savannah's national and int'l rnown are just lost. I'll admit the Master's has put Augusta on the map, but to say it exceeds Savannah in national and international prestige? That's an Augusta Convention & Trade whopper.

Columbuskidd: Ft. Benning is in Chattahoochee County, one of the counties of the Columbus MSA, so it's Columbus metro. All 12,000 people in Chattahoochee Co. are included in the 301,000 in Columbus MSA. And most Benning soldiers and their kids live in the city of Columbus anyway, so that's pretty near 100% of the military economy. Ft. Stewart is not in the Savannah MSA, but Savannah CSA -- soldiers and their families mostly live in Hinesville-Ft. St MSA. Some do live in Savannah MSA (Bryan County), but only a small percentage. The commuting distance is pretty far, and Hinesville is nice (a Renaissance City along with Columbus, Dahlonega, Savannah, Statesboro etc.).

BullochResident: Good that Statesboro was named a Renaissance City. It deserves it, 100%.

Columbus MSA is around 309,000 and the CSA is pushing 500,000.
