The city has closed a short stretch of Schatulga Road to through traffic between Cargo Road and Corporate Ridge Parkway for construction of a roundabout at Schatulga and Corporate Ridge.

Traffic is being routed by detour signs through Corporate Ridge Industrial Park on Corporate Ridge Parkway, Oneda Drive and Cargo Road.

That stretch of Schatulga sees more than 10,000 vehicles a day, including a considerable number of city trucks headed to and from the Pine Grove Landfill and the Sustainability Center and a city Public Works facility on Schatulga. Also affected will be the Muscogee County Jail, Rutledge State Prison, West Central Georgia Regional Hospital, Muscogee Manor and Cobis nursing homes and the Columbus Transitional Center.

Deputy City Manager David Arrington said the road will be closed for several months, depending on the weather and other factors that can affect construction.

Arrington said he does not expect any impact on city services because the detour takes traffic only a block out of its way.

The roundabout is being constructed to accommodate increased traffic at the intersection and also for “traffic calming effect” on well traveled, arrow-straight Schatulga.

The roundabout is being constructed to accommodate the many tractor-trailer rigs that use the intersection. Like other roundabouts in the city, it will have a “mountable curb” that allow the rear wheels of trucks and buses to ride up and over them, he said.

Yay! Another roundabout.

Columbus has gone crazy with roundabouts! Sounds cool to me.
