I was looking up old GA-related videos on Youtube and came across this video about spreading awareness of polio vaccination in Columbus, GA. The video is entitled " Babies and Breadwinners." It features some really wonderful images of everyday life of citizens of Columbus in 1961.

Notice, the announcer is speaking that old style American English that sounds just very old-fashioned tone: you clearly hear that same speaking style in various news reels from WWII. I think we would now classify such broadcast accents as Mid-Atlantic, but if you know another term, please share. I would be curious. Also you hear some of the local people speaking and you definitely hear definitely deep southern accents.

If the date was not already listed for this video, I would have thought this was filmed in 1955 for earlier, most of what you see just looks "older" to me than the early 1960s.

Also worthy to note is this color photo posted in the wikipedia of that same polio campaign in Columbus, GA which is definitely in the time frame of 1961 or so but is not noted with an exact date on the wikipedia.

Does anyone here remember this first-hand? I had one wonderful family member suffer from polio and had to walk with special-made crutches. I had mistakenly thought polio was eradicated world-wide, but it is not yet. There are still people who are still catching it from a few remote areas of Asia and Africa where vaccination is spotty at best.

And do you see that communication with the Africa-American community? That's what stood out to me from the video.
