The city will break ground on the South Lumpkin Road Linear Park Friday at 10 a.m. at 2010 Torch Hill Road, next to the Eagle Trace Apartments, according to a city release.

The two-plus-mile linear park will be akin to the Fall Line Trace, a multi-use pedestrian and bicycle trail. It will stretch from just north of Old Cusseta Road along an abandoned rail line to just beyond Torch Hill Road. The trail will link seven schools, a park and residential areas.

Mayor Teresa Tomlinson and Columbuc Councilor Mimi Woodson will speak at the ceremony.

The city plans for the park one day to link with the Riverwalk, Oxbow Meadows Environmental Learnig Center, the National Infantry Museum and the city’s expanding network of bicycle/pedestrian trails.

The $3.5 million project will be funded by the Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax that voters approved in 2012.

Good news for South Columbus.

Seriously, this is pretty cool... hopefully they will eventually continue this bike trail to meet the other one at some point.
