Hi! I might be moving to Columbus in the very near future and have a question on apartments. The job I applied is at the VA hospital there on the east side and I would like to find an apartment fairly close to there(5-10 miles). How is that area? I don't need anything real fancy. Just a well kept apartment in a safe area. Preferably I'd like one with a garage. Looking online I see quite a few options and alot of the monthly rent looks decent(Compared to where I am now. Housing is ridiculous here.) But pictures online can be deceiving so I just thought if I could get some personal recommendations that would be great. Thanks!

I don't know much about Columbus even though I've been here for a year and a half. When I hear "east side," however, I think "not good."

The East Side is pretty big? And I'm not sure what VA hospital you're referring to? The East Side in general has a few decent areas (Olde Town East, Bexley, Gahanna, Obetz, Easton, etc), but also some pretty crappy areas (Linden, Parsons corridor), so it just depends on where you're looking at exactly. Whitehall is okay... it's not the worst area and the population may be growing again with new development and home incentives from the city, so you may check in that area as well.
If you have the money, there was just a condo complex finished in Olde Towne, directly across from Downtown, that ran into financial trouble and had to be bailed out by the city. So you can get a very very good price on a brand new condo there. Check them out- Whitney Condominiums. Not sure if there are any low income requirements or anything, but something to look into.
