Hey all,

Young professional (27) moving back to Columbus from Cleveland (OSU grad). I recently took a position with an IT firm in Westerville and am looking to rent preferably keeping rent around the 650-700 range with a reasonable amount of space. I have done a fair amount of searching online and the amount of apartments is overwhelming and most seem to have terrible reviews, those that don't seem to be very pricey or small (600-650 sq ft for a 1 br). I am mainly looking in the Dublin,Worthington,Polaris,Westerville area. Does anyone have any recommendations on apartments or town homes?

The North part of town is going to be considerably more expensive than the more south you go. People give bad reviews all the time, it's usually because they were bad tenants and were treated as such. Most 1 BRs in your price range are going to be less than 750 sq ft. You're going to have to pay $850+ for a 1 BR that is more than that. If I were you, I'd cut my space requirements or look into obtaining some room mates.

You can find some apartments in the Grandview area for that price. Much closer to all the fun stuff but you still get the safety of the suburbs. Assuming you don't have kids, so since schools aren't an issue, the area between Grandview and Upper Arlington (some call it 5XNW, 5th Ave./King Ave. areas) is a very good choice. I just moved out of that area a few months ago and my 1-bedroom (which was one of the nicest in the area) rented for $745. The newer tenants pay a little more though, but there are places to be found there under $700.

I don't blame you for being weary of apartment complexes. There is a reason the reviews are terrible. Yeah, some of the people leaving negative reviews are bad tenants, but where there is smoke, there is fire. Management and maintenance are usually pretty bad, and even if most of the reviewers were bad tenants, who wants to live around so many bad neighbors? Most rentals in the Grandview area are smaller buildings, and all of my neighbors there were awesome.
