I am in the military and plan on separating this year and possibly attending Ohio State. I have already been accepted to the school as a transfer student so I won't be required to live on campus. I am looking for a place that is convenient to the school via public transportation or on foot, but also far enough to avoid being inundated in college 'kids'. Ideally I would like a commute that is around 30 minutes or less one way. I would also prefer a small apartment, definitely no houses or town-homes. Ohio State and Arizona State are my top choices, but I know very little about the city of Columbus. Any advice is appreciated.

Clintonville is the first place that comes to mind.

Grandview has a lot of apartments that really cater to graduate students and young professionals. Many of the law and medical students live in Grandview and can walk/bike to campus. The rents might be higher for some of the newer developments, but there should still be some reasonably priced.

Look into Grandview (west of campus, other side of Olentangy River and OH-315 expressway) or Clintonville (north of campus on High Street - doesn't really start until intersection with Arcadia near the Giant Eagle grocery store - anything south of that can be a little bit student neighborhood-y). Both are Columbus proper, though Grandview may also include Grandview Heights, which has a separate, well-performing school district, so rents and families will be in greater numbers. Going south on High Street will probably be too pricey but may not be depending on your budget. This area, referred to as Short North, has gotten expensive. Lot's of development there. Downtown may be another option with many new apartments opening or being built with bus service up High Street to campus. German Village is probably also too expensive and probably a little too far as it is on the southern side of the downtown core.

There are many apartments north of campus on High Street, even beyond Clintonville (check out Whetstone Park). High St. has decent bus service, which is free for students. Check the COTA routing service for service to campus for any prospective apartment. High St. buses would provide access to campus bars, Short North and the Arena District. Check weekend and late night service, however.

Perhaps check out Old Beechwold and Worthington, both on High Street.

Good shopping along High Street north of campus, even a Lucky's Market.

Here's a fun thread about Ohio State from the prospective of a mother of a student.

Here's her advice for those considering The Ohio State University.

I think one great advantage of Columbus over Arizona is its proximity to other major cities -- Cleveland, Cincinnati, Pittsburgh, Indianapolis, even Chicago and Detroit. Check out Dayton's aviation attractions if you're in the Air Force.

Topography and climate also are much different than in Arizona. Check out Mohican Region and Ohio Amish Country here, as well as Lake Erie.

Check out the Hocking Hills and The Wilds, let alone AEP ReCreation Land and the Wayne National Forest.

Immediately in the Columbus area is a great county park system, as well as one of the nation's best zoos.

If you like roller coasters, you have Cedar Point, the roller coaster capital of the world, and Kings Island, a tough combo to top anywhere.

Perhaps check Craig's List for renting a single room in a house.

Good luck and thanks for your service!

Hey there. I am current law/grad student at OSU and did my undergraduate here as well so I'd be happy to answer any potential questions you have.

Old North Columbus or Grandview are likely your best bets in my opinion.

This is in the heart of the red solo cup district. If you don't want to be around college kids this is not an area the OP would want.

haha yeah maybe that post was a joke? Nobody over 21 should consider living anywhere between High and 4th from 7th to 20th (or Frambes/Lane- probably even a few blocks past that too, but it does get quieter the further north you head).
