Hi
my wife just passed a stopped school bus, with the sign out(!)
It was on a difficult corner, a 2lane one way back street, and she didn't see the sign (or bus) until she was passing. Now she's scared stiff she's going to jail!
what's the law here in columbus about this? anyone know?
regards
jon

Unless the street is divided (such as islands) and you are headed in the opposite direction, you must stop.

Since she didn't get pulled over by an officer, she probably got away with it.

Scary!! Most of the time when I see a stopped school bus with it's stop sign out that means that children are getting on/off the bus. If there is a chance of that then I recommend stopping. I always stop unless, like the last message said, it is a divided road. Even if the road has 2 lanes or more I usually stop. Screw the people behind me. They can wait as long as I know that the children on/off the bus are safe. I wouldn't worry about it. She is probably in the clear.

From your quote she knows she did wrong.

There are no red light cameras on school busses. If she did not get stopped she got away with it. I'm sure she will be more vigilant in the future. Tell her to stop worrying

My friend did that and got a letter from the city to consider it a warning. I guess the bus driver reported his license plate. This was in Westerville, BTW.

I think your wife should be more concerned at the fact she could of hit a child not the fact she could have gone to jail. Which if reported she would receive a visit from the highway patrol and issued a warning or ticket (giving the circumstances for a difficult stop the driver was probably more concerned for the children's safety). And even at a stop as you describe it is difficult to miss a BIG YELLOW School Bus, your wife needs to be a little more observant.

Your wife wouldn't go to jail for it. She may get a ticket or a letter or both.

Well as a former 10 year school bus driver in California, if the law is similar, then she could be cited, that is, if the driver or a cop saw her pass. Or, if the loading or unloading is over, the driver probably would not notice it to report, if now busy conversing, strapping a child in or etc, at which point the stop sign and reds should be cancelled to reduce gridlock. But just always be wary of school buses, and treat their signals the same as stationary ones, since you never know whos "precious cargo" is on board. It may even be someone related to you.

I'm guessing since this happened three years ago, that you're all just talking to yourselves and the OP probably doesn't need to worry about possible consequences anymore. Just saying
