When I moved here from Philly in 1994 I could not get over the culture shock. The horror story I experienced is the dismal public transit system and how difficult it was trying to get around independently in such a car centric city. Driving was not an option because I was single at the time and I could not afford both a car ( insurance, monthly payments, gas ,maintainence etc.) and an apartment ( rent, utililies etc.) on the salary I was making. Also moving to a more walkable area such as the villages ( German, Italian, Victorian ) , Clintonville, Grandview etc was out of the question because they were so far from where I worked ( DFAS on East Broad Street) and the daily commute would have been horrendous and besides those neighborhoods were out of my affordable price range. Bexley, which is somewhat walkable, was close by but there was was no way I could afford there.

Living without a car in Columbus = hell. Seriously, I know people do it, but that just sounds horrendous.

Frankly, I think the city is very pleasant. I moved there after a 13 year stint in metro Washington DC, and I liked Columbus much more than Northern Virginia. It was a great place to raise kids.

I've subsequently left Columbus for Sacramento, California, but though there is a lot to do out here, I'd really choose Columbus over living in California.

No horror story from me at all.

The only people I knew in Columbus without cars lived near campus and worked either at OSU or took the bus straight down High Street to downtown. However, their "range" for moving around is very limited needless to say. These were all younger people too.

I haven't lived in Columbus since 2005. My family moved there when I was 9 from Oregon, and I moved away for good when I was 20, and do not have ANY regrets. My dad has already moved away too, and my mom will be gone within a year, so I'm starting to doubt I'll ever see Columbus again, and again... I have NO regrets.

I have no horror stories. I've been here about a year now and love the city. Does it need improvement in some areas but what city doesn't. Its a great city especially for young professionals and young adults.

I was not overly impressed with Columbus after first moving to the city ... now, I'm very happy with this impressive, modern and culturally diverse metropolis.
Sure, it lacks some of the amenities that are found in older, larger and more established cities like Cleveland, Detroit or Chicago ...
However, it's a very clean, progressive city that is definitely "coming into it's own"
