I recenlty tried Norton for a while on two computers ;no problem or resource problems. I have used AVG for some years updating and like it .MSE basically isn't enough for my use. Its basic protection only.
OK, both Symantec/Norton and McAfee are the two best out there for PC's; So, which do you prefer?
Over the years I have used both Symantec/Norton and McAfee, but for the past 10+ years I have used AVG and AVAST, which are both efficient and hassle-free.... There are free versions and versions you can pay for.

Why are people trying to compare a paid version anti-virus vs a free (basic) version?
Try comparing both paid versions of Norton and AVG anti-virus, there is a very clear winner - AVG.
Monthly on 20 to 30 computers remotely through the internet, fixing performance issues (mainly browser problems).
When I see norton - advise my clients Norton is a resource hog, and unless they go with another anti-virus and cannot treak their computer to the best it can be. After installing AVG - imediately there is up to a 300% improvement in the speed.

Only when it comes to usability. Some people prefer actual protection which is where MSE fails. I can't imagine why anyone would recommend it.
I've personally never had a problem with MSE and have it used it for years and prefer it on my Windows machines to using AVG (which I really like as well and use on my tablets and cell phones). Of course, I also tend to be a rather cautious user and stick to known sites and only download from trusted sources. If you're out browsing porn and warez sites and downloading bootleg movies and songs...then yes, you need something a little more 'aggressive' in the protection department. It's kind of like the level of protection needed when going home to your wife of 10 years versus taking a stroll in the red light district...
I have MSE on my current computer running Windows 7. I also run Malwarebytes on the 1st of every month; Malwarebytes has found threats the MSE let through.
