My son's an avid gamer, and he's got a birthday coming up. I'd love to get him a laptop, but want to make sure it covers his gaming needs.
We've got a mini-mac now that I use for work, and we share. He's got WoW on there, but can't download the latest upgrade because we don't have enough memory. I'm guessing memory's the biggest need, but I know video cards and graphics are important, as well. He'd like to play stuff from Steam, especially Garry's mod - I know we don't have the right video card for that. (I'm using the words "video card", but I don't actually know what one is, or what we need!)
Anybody have recommendations? We're on a limited budget, or I'd be going all out.
Why game on a laptop with a tiny screen and low resolution? If you game on a desktop you can have two 24" monitors on a dual video video card. I play Neverwinter Nights 2 on one screen while the other screen has the Windows Performance Monitor running telling me my CPU & Memory load. Also has a web page open to game hints. Dual monitor video gaming is awesome.
No gaming laptop can match a great gaming desktop. And laptops break down a lot but if you build your own gaming desktop you can easily replace parts.
If you get a laptop with only a 1 year warranty it could be a paperweight if it breaks down after 1 yr. Happened to me with a $2500 Sony laptop - I couldn't pay Sony $1300 for a replacement motherboard.
I was *hoping* for $500 or less - am I just dreaming?

He wants a laptop for portability. Could I get more bang for my buck for a desktop? He does have friends who have built their own, and he's not super-opposed to doing that - but his real preference is for a ready-to-go laptop. I didn't realize until I started talking to my friends about this that you can't really modify laptops... thanks for your thoughts.
11 inch screen may be a deal breaker, but I LOVE it.
Sorry for the double-post - I just clicked the link. Hmmm... if grandparents and I went in together.... Would this last a while? Or would it be phased out within a year?
Sorry, too, for my ignorance here - but I wouldn't need to ask if I knew!
