My left shift key is not working well at all. I have to jam it down with two fingers to make it work. The adjacent A and Z keys are a bit sticky too. I have no idea why, or what to do about it, but it's a real problem. I have to type of lengthy research papers for school. My laptop is only 2 years old or so. I have a Dell Inspiron 1525 if it matters. Any advice?

Was something spilled on it before? In any case, you may need to replace it ...

Here are some instructions:
How to replace damaged keyboard on Dell Inspiron 1525 laptop >> Inside my laptop

In the meantime, plug in an USB keyboard. It'll get you by in the meantime.

There's an old joke "You might be an engineer if you try to fix a $5 radio."

Keyboards are cheap.

After cleaning it, you might want to fix the root problem which could include eating/drinking while using the laptop or exposing it to other harmful elements that could cause this!

Did any of you nitwits (not you Narfcake) suggesting an replacement keyboard notice that the OP has a laptop??? She might be able to plug in an external keyboard at home or office, but for portable use she's going to need a replacement keyboard for the laptop, as (only) Narfcake suggested.

I carry my wireless keyboard and mouse with me when I take my laptop off site. Goes in the tote bag with the laptop. Not a big deal and given the amount I type, they were well worth the $50 I paid for the pair and worth the trouble to carry. My work output is much better using full-size keyboard and regular mouse. I would go crazy trying to type a lengthy document on a laptop keyboard.

Replacement laptop keyboards are almost as cheap as usb keybords. i just bought one for my dell inspiron 1720 for around $20 including shipping.
