I'm somewhat behind technologically. My 10 year old daughter is going to stay with a relative for 10 days and I'd like to get her something comprehensive so that she can (a) email; (b) send texts; (c) get on the internet; (d) watch tv/videos ...

She has a cell phone (it's been lost for a week, but we'll figure it out). She also has a regular kindle.

I'm wondering about a laptop versus a tablet of some kind? I'd appreciate any suggestions, models, brands, anything.

Laptops are more capable, tablets are more flexible. They'll both do what you are looking for. I'd probably say a tablet of some kind would be more beneficial in this situation. It's smaller and easier to travel with, and they're instant-on so if she has to move or whatever, she doesn't have to shut down...pack it up...plug it back in...wait for it to turn back on.

"The New iPad" just came out so you might be able to find iPad2's on craigslist or on sale somewhere, since they're now considered a generation behind. If you want to go android (who doesn't?) I'd go with something like http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/asus...nt;contentBody or http://reviews.cnet.com/tablets/sams...nt;contentBody

Which she will, apparently, lose. The bigger the better. Easier to find.

Does the relative not have a computer for sending e-mails and watching movies?
If she can't find her cell phone maybe she won't be able to send texts for 10 days?

Maybe its just me, but I wouldn't go out and buy my 10 year old a laptop just for a visit to a relative.

I have an i-phone, and I wouldn't want to watch too many movies on it. While its fine for short clips, I can't imagine watching that tiny screen for an hour and a half.

A laptop will do everything but text. Get her a laptop if you must indulge her.

Thanks, the visit is kind of not fun for her, so she needs a lot to do and means to communicate.
