Can't use older printer on Windows 7 (crash, icon, installation, XP)

I bought an HP printer in 2009 for an XP computer.
I just bought a Windows7 computer and the HP printer install program said it's not compatible with this Windows7. So it wouldn't run the full install.
Is there anything I can do to use the older printer? It's an HP 4180.
CDs and DVDs can't update, it's always best to download the drivers and installers from the manufacturer site so you know you have the most up-to-date version.

When the "Install the printer driver" menu appears, click the "Windows Update" button
After it downloads,
Select "HP", then "HP Deskjet F4100 series"
HP multifunction printers are known for not being fully compatible with newer a OS. You usually can get one of the individual drivers to work but usually if you run the solutions center it blows everything out. Since printer prices have dropped dramatically through the years, I'd suggest you go out and buy a Brother multifunction. The Brother seems to be always upward compatible to new OS's.
But drivers are available through either HP or MS, so I'm not sure why you choose to throw rocks at HP units. Can you provide specific issues or is this just a general assumption?

No they aren't, if HP provides a driver software package for download on their website for a newer OS than what was available when it was released, then it's been tested and is compatible, no different than any other printer or device manufacturer.
If you want to throw HP under the bus, then bring up their horribly bloated, crash prone driver/software package.
The common problem here is people are using an installation disk that is not compatible with the version of Windows they're running, that does not mean that the printer is not compatible, it's the software package that's incompatible.

The software package is the problem. Its what connects all the functions all together to work under one icon. Getting a driver outside of the software package is easy and usually works. Its when you try to do it through the interface program everything gets screwed up. I've had printers since the DOS 2.1 days, so I have numerous years of experience dealing with drivers. So if I'm going to throw HP multifunctions under the bus then I'm also going to include Epson, Canon, Lexmark and Kodak. But the one with the least amount of problems is the Brother. And FWIW I currently never use the included CDs. I go online and download the latest version.
