I haven't kept up with portable hard drives in years so bear with me. Do they even make portable drives now where you can take an SD card out of your camera and stick it in the portable drive(assuming portable drives even have an SD connection like readers besides USB 2.0) to upload pics with a push of a button on the portable drive? Reason i ask is that i really don't want to take my laptop on vacation.
After i finish my day taking pics, i just want to return to the hotel and remove the SD card from my camera, then stick it in the portable drive and press a button to have the pics transferred to the drive. I can then format, etc. the SD card and put it back in the camera for the next day. I would ideally bring several SD cards also. I would want a portable drive that is not that much bigger than my palm. I also wouldn't mind if the portable drive has a compact flash connection too. Let me know if there is such a portable drive or any suggestions that would make it convenient for me...Thanks.
Perhaps you are over thinking the process. I have a 32GB SD card in my camera. This camera takes 10 mega pixel pictures. It was purchased in October of 2010 and has been on all vacations, recorded landscaping changes, house repairs and outside work, all parties, visits to friends and relatives, etc. It is also used to make hi-res AVCHD movies. I have never deleted a large number of pictures, just doubles or ones that I take by accident.
The chip has 1599 pictures on it and the camera reports that I have 996 pictures remaining to be taken.
So unless you are going to take a gazillion pictures on vacation you probably don't need to lug a portable drive around.
If you want it for backup that's a different story.
Do you have a smart phone? How much memory does it have? It might be possible to transfer to it depending on cables available, etc.
I don't have a smart phone. I will likely just buy several 8GB or 16GB SD cards and go with that. I had an experience of losing a 32GB card with all my pics on it once before, so don't want that to happen anymore. The price of the portable drive is too expensive.

I use tri-fold wallets. I put SD cards in a side pocket of the wallet when traveling. If it's safe enough for a credit card it's safe enough for an SD card.
