For over a decade, MS has been releasing patches and other updates to cover security holes in IE and Windows. Why can't they just make their software so that it's not so easy to affect it with malware?
It's like every month they suddenly realize they did something wrong, they left something open that should have been closed.
Do their engineers just sit around playing video games?
This is what happens when people listen too and believe the media which is designed to get you to watch them by being sensationalist. I've never had a virus on windows and I've been using it for 15 years.
They have made windows progressively more secure.. windows 8.1 is the most secure operating system so far... but I personally don't want them to lock it completely down like windows phone so you can't do anything with it...
Best advice is to install avast free antivirus and malwarebytes.. scan with malwarebytes after you install any software, java updates, etc and you should be good to go.. biggest thing these days is everything is loaded with browser hijackers, and adware basically designed to get you to inadvertently purchase products and click links to generate ad revenue.
This is especially true on smartphones, which are loaded with crapware popup ads on any app you might use. The are not harmful, just annoying. I'd argue android and windows phone are both less secure from the standpoint that it's so easy to get fooled by the popup ad that tell you that you have a security issue, that you must download this app or that app... with regular windows, and adblock, no problem...
Another thing that annoys me is that they stopped updating XP and right away there are huge exploits.
They're responsible for protecting XP and they abandoned it like a rusty old bicycle.
I know the reason they keep updating IE is that they keep adding things to it. But they should be more careful how they add things to it. I know computer programs are large and complicated. But they should find more efficient ways to keep it secure.
Do you pay them every month to keep it secure? The desktop OS cost may cost $100, how much service can you expect for $100, 10 years and you are complaining like they never gave any warning.
Software has security problems because people want and accept more features at the expense of security.

For what it is worth Apple releases security updates for OSX roughly once every four weeks, and perhaps just as often for Safari. Even though there are new functionality added to each release, OSX really hasn't changed much since its debut 14 years ago in terms of the core OS. If you hang out on Apple's own user-based community forums you will notice that often times the security flaws are spotted from Mac hobbyists/fanbois/etc. and not from Apple software engineers.
Microsoft, like Apple, employ the best in the business.

The majority of viruses/malware out there target computers/users who do not keep their computers up to date. That is they exploit the same holes that the security updates patch.

So how long should they support it, Robert, in your opinion? It was released in 2001.
10 years isn't long enough for you? 15 maybe? Would that be acceptable?

Using this same logic I wonder why, after 113 years Ford still can't make a car that isn't prone to break down...
Do you even have a clue as to just how complex an operating system like Windows is?
The simple answer is (and has been for years and years), don't use IE.
