Replace the battery in the mac, buy an ssd for it, and upgrade the ram to 8gb. It'll feel like new and be good for a few years yet. As far as the heat issue goes it probably just needs a clean.

Maybe you'd be happy with a Chromebook, OP? I just got a refurbished 14" HP Chromebook for $199. It has about 8-hour battery life. If something can be done in a browser, it can usually be done in a Chromebook!
I like how some people here don't even try to admit they've been ripped off considering the price tags of Apple products. You're replacing a battery and memory, but you never thought about doing that on a regular laptop for half the price of a Macbook?

Yawn. The equivalent windows notebook costs about the same, and by equivalent I don't mean a cheap plastic brick with two hours battery life. Also macs hold their resale value unlike windows pc's and have the best customer service in the business.
I have my macbook pro for 4 yrs now and its starting to have problems like shorter battery life, it gets hot, slower.. i was contemplating to get another macbook which bestbuy has 150$ off but i would still end up buying it for atleast 1k or just get a touch screen windows laptop which i would have alot of options and less than 700$...
At that price it looks like you are looking at the 13 inch macbook pro. I think it comes down to how much you want to pay to get more battery life. How long are you getting now. Even if you replace your battery, it probably won't last as long as a new model with only a 13" screen, if you have a 15" or 17".
Have you looked at the clearance section of the Apple online store.
I recently replace my HDD from a 750GB to 500GB SSD hard drive and had Apple reinstall the OS and it ran faster than new. It cost me about $300 for the drive and $10 for a tiny screw driver set. The new drive made a big difference. Also reinstalling the OS naturally cleaned out stuff.
At the sub $700 price range, you'll be overwhelmed with Windows options, but first you'll have to deal with all the extra software manufacturers ship their computers with. I won't pay for extra for a touch screen yet and I'd only consider a touch screen if it converted to a tablet, then I'd only get a tablet with an SSD due to the rough usage. Now it is no longer a cheap basic laptop. I tried out the HP X2 for a couple of months and liked it but later sold it.
You will get what you pay for with a Windows laptop, if you pickup the $500 unit versus the $700 from the same manufacturer, you will be missing some thing, whether it is screen resolution, a celeron processor, or shorter battery life, there is a reason they are selling it for cheaper.
Get the computer where you will get the best support. If you been trouble free for the last 4 years, why change it. If you switch to Windows, will you know how to or have people to help you?

All that extra software is easily removed by downloading and running PCDECRAPIFIER. It's really a non-issue.

Or by just buy a PC that doesn't have extra software. The thinkpad x,t and w lines only have Norton antivirus and Microsoft office installed which can easily be uninstalled without this party software. The HP precision is similar.
