A few years (4-5) ago we got an hp pavilion p6640f from newegg that has served quite nicely for our mainstream desktop computer needs. Now I need to replace the ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics card and I am willing to strap on an anti static band and try myself, but could use some help picking a new card that will fit the space in the case; work with its 1920x1080 HDMI/VGA monitors (it has two) and not require either extra power or extra cooling than the original, as additional or better fans and dedicated additional power sources are not in the budget.
Additional specs include:
2.8 ghz processor - quad 4 phenom II
8GB RAM
Windows 7
If anyone has advice on mid-price mid-performance card to buy I'd be very appreciative. Looked at a list generated by newegg when I selected for 1920x1080 resolution and while not a hugely long list, I was at a loss to know if any card on it will serve...
Thanks in advance to anyone who has advice.

ATI Radeon HD 4200 graphics is integrated into the motherboard. It's not a graphics card.

Your motherboard does have a PCI Express x16 expansion slot just for the purpose of adding a more powerful graphics card.

Unfortunately the Power Supply Unit that ships with the HP Pavilion p6640f is only a 250 watt unit and can't handle more powerful graphics cards. It's barely enough to power the hardware that shipped with the PC.

You need a new PSU if you want to upgrade your graphics.

Edit: I would ignore the max resolution filter on New Egg. It's not a useful spec to search by unless you do a power search and select 1920x1080 and every resolution higher then that. Max resolution is the maximum. If a card supports, for example, 2560x1600 maximum it is also capable of all resolutions lower then 2560x1600 including 1920x1080. All modern graphics cards support resolutions higher then 1920x1080.

Here's a cheap, but good power supply. - http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004IZN3K2/...xtension-kb-20 I bought one for a family member's X4 955 BE computer. Has worked just great for a year paired with a GTX 560 SE (and my nephew games a lot).

A good choice for your computer would be a GTX 750 Ti. Cool running and uses very little power (so that rather tight, pre-built HP case won't be an issue).

Amazon.com: EVGA GeForce GTX 750Ti Superclock w/G-SYNC Support 2GB GDDR5 128bit, Dual-Link DVI-I, HDMI, DP 1.2 Graphics Card (02G-P4-3753-KR): Electronics

For a $175 total you can breath quite a bit of life into your old PC.
