I read that this is might be possible by replacing the optical drive. Would the laptop I'm considering allow this configuration?

Laptop HP 17.3" model m7-n101dx

Internal HD (replacing the current one with this) HGST 2.5" 0J22423

SSD (perhaps fit this in the optical drive?) Samsung 2.5" MZ-75E250B

I appreciate any help.

HDD shouldn't be a problem. I doubt HP makes a coverplate for the optical drive bay. The replaceable drive bays covers are usually rectangular in shape.

Maybe just go with a internal SSD and keep your large storage at home and carry an external USB drive. Right now you are talking about close to $200 , I'd just install one 500GB SSD

Hey great choice!
However I had some problems with HP. It becomes too hot, due to excessive rotation of the fans.

SSD should fit greatly in the optical drive!

Excessive fan rotation does not cause overheating, it is the result of overheating caused by some other issue such as blocked fins on a heatsink.
