Can someone please explain this? The other day I switched my default browser from IE to Firefox. Now I am getting strange (to me) actions.
Before, whenever I closed down of an evening, I had all cookies removed. The next morning when I booted up, I opened Gmail and got my mail - no signing in. From Gmail, I could go to City Data or other web site forums, sign in and check "remember me". After that I stayed signed in until I shut down of an evening.
All that was with IE. Now, with Firefox, it is different. First, when I open Gmail, I get a window asking me to sign in. That window already has my name and password in it and a bar to click for sign-in. That might be all right if that was the only time it happened but, no, it happens all day. Every time I close Gmail and re-open it, I have to sign in again.
Yes, I could leave Gmail open all day, as well as the other sites but I don't like to do that. It isn't my way. To each his own?
Next. I go to City Data or other habitual forums and get the same sign-in window. There is no place to check 'remember me', just my name and password. Again, every time I close a web site and come back later to check more postings, I have to sign in again - all day long.
This only happens with Firefox and Gmail. This morning, I came to City Data via Thunderbird and got to sign in the old IE way. I clicked "remember me" but it isn't doing it. I'm not getting Firefox's window but I am having to sign in each time.
I can deal with their idiosyncracies. I'd just like to know why or what. Can someone explain, please? Thank you.
You have to set a different "Remember me" for each browser. Firefox does not know your IE "remember me" settings, so you have to tell it to anew.
Under Tools/Options you have 2 relevant tabs Privacy and security.
Under Privacy you set "remember history" under Security you set it to remember passwords. There is even a section "Saved passwords" where you can view sites and their log-in that are browser's memory.
The cookies are used to remember the login details. When they are deleted, you have to sign in again. Perhaps IE was not deleting all of your cookies like you thought it was.
Oh, I've always had to sign in first thing in the morning - even with IE. That is except for Gmail where I never had to sign in. It's the rest that is new. The having to re-sign in all day long, every time I come back. And itis only if I come via a post at Gmail. From Thunderbird, I get in fine.

The primary purpose for this is if you are on a public computer or computer other people use, if you forget to log out then your login will not persist. Instead of a persistent cookie the web site sets a session cookie that will will only persist for X amount of time or if the browser is closed.
This would be irrelevant of browser settings with the the exception of blocking all cookies. e.g. if you are not clicking the remember me check box and the cookie expires in one hour. When you do not visit the site in one hour it will expire no matter what settings you have in the browser.
If you are logged out and your username and password appears in the text boxes this is a function of the browser. It has nothing to do with cookies, "remember me" or the site itself.

I only mentioned the cookies to say how I used to do it when my browser was IE. Then I was talking about what happens now that Firefox is my browser. I may have gotten it fixed, now. Shall see today. Thanks.
