Speak for yourself. I am glad there are guys like NHDave that raise a voice if somethings awry. Everyone concerned about how a major operating system handles your data isn't paranoid. It's the principle of honesty for some. I for one would like to have at least some control of what my upload bandwidth is being used for. I understand your points as well, but I prefer an OS where you are in the drivers seat more so than an Android type OS that feels like it's on auto pilot.

Snowden used Tails some, but he also used Qubes which is not really Linux.

Look, I don't blame someone for wanting to make sure a company handles their business on the up and up. I'm with you all on that. I'm just saying that Microsoft has always collected data on you. Why is it that all of a sudden, now, it's an issue? Apple is also guilty of this as well. Also Google. Where is the outrage with those companies? Yet, everyday, we "Google" something without blinking an eye. Mac users rush to download the latest version of OSX and IOS for their iPhones and iPads, yet when Microsoft does the same thing, everybody goes all to pieces? Sure, you can say that those other companies are not forcing the new downloads down your throats, but again, there's simple ways around that.

That's really all my point. It's laughable that people would be up in arms over Windows 10, but live in some fantasy world that they are much safer with an older version of Windows. Nope. You're not. Now, if you simply just want to stick with the older version because that's what you're used to and enjoy the most, I can understand that. I'm in the same camp. I would much rather use Windows 7 as opposed to anything newer. Honestly, I'd rather use Windows XP. But, I have just always treated Windows as "use at your own discretion". There's going to be a certain amount of privacy and security issues with Windows. Always has been, always will be. No amount of whistle blowing is ever going to change that fact. Luckily, for personal computing, we live in a day and age where there are choices. We don't have to live in the OSX world or the Windows world and have our stuff work. Linux has caught up, we have a lot more security tools we can utilize nowadays. To me, the best way to sock it to ol' Microsoft is to stop using their products. Once they see usage decline, they would have to make a change. That is probably the best way to blow the whistle on any company that data mines.

I am not "computer dumb". I did not ask this to be installed in any way, shape, or form. They attempted to install this AGAINST MY CONSENT.

The only reason it was NOT successful is because I'm NOT "computer dumb".

As I pointed out in several articles, Microsoft has ADMITTED that this is happening. I'm not the "dumb" one here.

Best option is to ignore him, you can't convince the fanbois that Microsoft is doing wrong.

I didn't say you were computer dumb. I'm referring to those who know squat about computers other than checking email or the occasional "Googling". Those people are the ones I wouldn't blame for being ticked off that their computers are somehow upgrading the OS without them understanding the process. It's those, self proclaimed computer experts who are making it out to be this major disaster, causing a panic amongst the community of those less educated in the field, that I raise issue with. A computer expert is going to look at it and say, "OK, if Microsoft is dumb enough to push out a screwed up way of updating to the new OS, then let's start by changing the updates to manual or turning updates off altogether." That right there solves 90% of your problem. But no, when I did mention that before, I was meant with sarcastic responses of "Oh, like we didn't know that", or responses of "How are those computers going to get patched if updates are turned off?" Even after I specifically said there are alternative ways to patch your machine besides having updates turned on to automatic, that was met with deaf ears.

Also, I don't, personally believe Microsoft was trying to be malicious in their approach to push out Windows 10. I think they screwed up with their attempt to make it easy on those who are non-computer people, and because of such, wound up causing a bigger issue in traditional Microsoft fashion, instead of just, maybe, putting the update in the Microsoft store or having it available on their website. More than likely, Microsoft was trying to lock it down so that those who were eligible for the upgrade got it, and those who were not, didn't. They still want their cake and eat it too. Unlike OSX, where it's out there to install for free, or it's like $20 if you want a hard copy. Obviously Microsoft wants to protect its investment and make money off of its OS, while offering it free as well. And also, obviously, Microsoft felt the best way to push out the updates is through Windows Update, so that they could check the computer type, the OS version, etc....they have to have that info for the update to work correctly. There were better ways to do it, and I'm sure Microsoft will learn from their mistakes. But, I'm not going to buy into the conspiracy theories that Microsoft is being devious in their approach.

You obviously have been ignoring me, because to be accusing me of being a Microsoft fanboi is probably the most uninformed statement you could ever make. A quick post search of me in the tech forums here at C-D will let you know, quickly, I am anything but a Microsoft fanboi. If I'm a fanboi of anything, it's technology in general. I don't care if it's Microsoft, Apple, Linux, or anything else. I give props when props should be given, and criticism when it's warranted - regardless which company/OS it is. I don't live, solely, in any one ecosystem. I have Windows computers, Linux computers, Apple computers, and enjoy what each have to offer, and dislike what each come short of. Being in the IT world is about coming up with solutions, rather than to sit around and ***** about something that might uncover how much porn you have downloaded on your computer. Don't like the way Microsoft does something? Go with some other product. Don't know how to use anything else other than Microsoft? Learn. It's as simple as that.

Ignore me if you must. I don't mean to come off all gruff, but making Microsoft out to be some evil company that is wanting to know everything about you as if you're that important is junior varsity stuff, man. Honestly, if Microsoft is guilty of such, so is every other tech company out there. That's the downfall of living on the information superhighway. The most laughable thing I ever read is when someone posts, "That's why I use OSX" as if using OSX somehow exempts them from privacy issues and malware. LOL! Even Linux can have security holes. I will almost bet you have used Google in some form or fashion. That company is notorious for collecting data on you. All of these companies want data, so they know how to market to you.

I'm sorry if you have had a bad experience with Windows 10. But recent history has found that Windows users, while bitching and complaining, still wind up giving up their sacred cow of their current version for a newer version. Then they get used to it and start to like it, and then complain about the next version. But, they still upgrade. You will still upgrade at some point yourself. My advice to you is if you do work in IT and it's giving you that much stress in your life, you might want to consider a new line of work. Because one thing is always constant in IT, and that's change.
