I have 2 computers and I'm looking to share the keyboard and mouse between the 2 machines. I understand this can be done using a KVM switch but I'm not familiar with how they work. Does anyone have a recommendation?

USB keyboard and mouse? Or traditional PS2 ports? And what kind of video connection?
I've used KVM switches for years, and own five of them, but most of the ones I have are older. I've found, though, that even an older switch can work with a USB-only PC if you buy the right adapter.
There a several types that will depend on your specific cabling/connectors. Basically they work by switching which PC your Keyboard, Video and Mouse are connected to, without having to physically move cables.

That switch costs about $27. Do you have a really high end mouse/keyboard? If not - why not just buy a second mouse/keyboard? Especially now during "back to school" sales when you can find some heavy discounting. For example - I can usually pick up the Logitech mouse I like for as little as $9.99 - although the lowest price I can find today is $12.99 (list is $29.99):

At the consumer level, these are pretty much commodities. Just figure out what inputs you need, and pick the right one.
Another consideration is a virtual KVM (less cabling!). But understand the limitations of those (e.g. it resides on the OS, so you won't really have pre-boot access).

Yeah, I wish I could do a software solution but one of the computers I'm using is a company computer and is locked down pretty tight.
