Hello!
I am quite interested in buying one of these printers (Epson or Brother) with long lasting ink tank technology.
These printers are bit more expensive than regular jet printer models, but save a lot of $$$ on ink, because they have large and easily rechargeable ink tanks that last really long.
This is what I need.
I threw away Canon MG Pixma printer that was simply horrible, ate tons of ink, was noisy, bulky and slow.

I believe my requirements are pretty simple: budget up to $300, long lasting ink tank, ability to print both documents and photos in decent quality, printing on both sides is desirable (I know, EcoTank doesn't have this feature on models cheaper than $400).

Brother printers are cheaper ($160-200 vs 300 for EcoTank) and have more features such as printing on both sides in all models. But based on reviews I am not sure about the print quality that Brother printers provide. EcoTank seems better here.

Recently I visited Office Depot and an associate didn't recommend EcoTank 2650 for printing photos. However I saw many positive reviews on Amazon and other sites from users who printed photos with this printer.

Any recommendations here? Do you have any experience with Epson or Brother EcoTank / InkVestment printers?

Thanks in advance!

my solution is buying third party ink. 1/3 the Canon price. Amazon makes it easy.

Thanks.
And what about a laser?
I didn't mention it here, but I also might consider HP color laser printer for $220 or so. Pretty good reviews. Not great for photos, but acceptable. I see third party laser cartridges for $100, that's a quarter of HP cartridge price. Should I also look in this direction?

It is worth trying generic laser cartridges, but never used them for color. Lasers are OK for business level color, but not photos. Check amazon reviews for remanufactured cartridge reviews. That's what I did for my inkjet cartridges.

Thanks.
I forgot I have a little thermal printer for photos. It prints pretty decently, but only in small format (4*6). At least I am partially covered already. Probably color laser would be a good option my case (for home office stuff). Or Brother InkVestment that is pretty cheap and has good capabilities

On older models, Brother didn't invalidate warranty if 3rd party ink was used. Only if the ink was determined to cause a failure would the warranty be voided. Not certain what the policy is today. Shelf life for ink is a few years usually. Not certain which is the better investment.

Brother color laser. Excellent quality and buy a set of carts on eBay for around $75.

Look through these threads. There are numerous discussions regarding it.
