Linux is for you. I was a long time Windows user...once I went to Linux, I never looked back. It will work with your older hardware and always will.

Actually, computer obsolescence is becoming less of a problem. Moore's law was reaching its end in 2010, and computer components are now built with components such as long-life capacitors. My current motherboard dates from about 2012, and is still running strong. I have a newer motherboard on the shelf, but when I get around to using it, I don't expect any real performance increases. My printer and scanner are also ancient, but unless I want to start printing in color, there is no real reason to upgrade.
