Has anyone seen this?

"Getting verified on Facebook and Instagram used to be free. Now it's going to cost around $12 a month. CEO Mark Zuckerberg said over the weekend that he's launching a paid subscription service called Meta Verified. It looks a lot like the one Elon Musk just introduced at Twitter.2 days ago"

Is this some premium account or something or is it for all?

The appropriate term to use is rent seeking.

It's not rent seeking. It's a company trying to make money. I believe the correct term is: capitalism.

It is for celebs and businesses. Not the Average Joe or Jane. So if you see Tom Hanks with a blue check you KNOW it's really him and not an impersonator...

Twitter started this trend "pay for blue mark" as Malloric said, and now FB is jumping on.

Thanks
So, it's to guard against fake accounts?
Funny thing is, I don't use my real name on FB anyways.

It is but really: it's just a new revenue stream for Facebook. Businesses will worry someone will get the blue check saying "We're Coca Cola"... so they'll pay to prevent that...
This happened in November when Twitter started it. Pretty funny.

If it was a one time fee to process the verification of the identity for the facebook account, I would think it really is about blocking against fake accounts. However at $12 a month reoccurring fee, it seems that it is another revenue stream shrouded in false good intentions.
