Microphone Stopped Working on Old-School iPhone Earbuds w/3.5MM Plug (buy, troubleshoot)

The microphone stopped working on my old-school iPhone earbuds. I can still hear through them fine, but the mic is kaput. Best way to troubleshoot?

I'd just buy a new pair. They are really cheap. Or borrow a pair to test.
