When you acquire a new machine, pull the hard drive out of the old one, plug into the dock with the old drive inserted, and import the files you want onto the new machine.
The external hard drive dock can also function for backing up your new machine data.
This.
I always use the external dock I have for things like this. Many times, the laptops I'm working with are screwed up, and it's easier to get files off the drive mounted to a working computer.
Yeah I don't know. While I have a hard drive dock and it's great, when someone starts out saying they are not technical, I don't think buying a techy gadget and surgically removing the hard drive from the laptop is the solution. I believe the time would be better spent learning how to proactively back up one's data once in a blue moon...maybe even regularly.
No worries, if we get to help you and you are happy with the service, you can make a donation to your local animal shelter on my behalf!
Thanks for all the info contained in your previous response, TL. I've yet to get my head around everything you had to say. Meanwhile, I just wanted to let you know that six months ago I adopted two kitty cats from our local *RSPCA Animal Shelter. Gracie and Ebony are their names and they're doing fine!

I would generally take advice Turcoloco offers over advice I offer. Honestly. I dabble with less experience than he has. I would not want to confuse the issue for you.
2.
A three year old laptop may not have a SATA SSD which would be compatible with the Thermaltake dock I posted above, but may have an M-SATA SSD.
You would require an M-SATA compatible dock, such as: https://www.amazon.com/FREEGENE-Encl...ps%2C74&sr=8-3
